Muharram processions have been banned in Kashmir since the conflict began in the disputed region in 1989. Kashmir is a Muslim majority region. However, only at few Shia dominated regions processions have been allowed. On the 8th and 10th of Muharram, streets are blocked and people are asked not to join processions. Whenever processions take place police seize down people by using force that results in casualties and panic.
